What’s in a Name?

This map visualizes U.S. stream names from the GNIS dataset. Each glowing point represents a named water feature.

Ephemeral names (arroyo, wash, gulch) suggest water that flows occasionally in dry landscapes.

Persistent names (bayou, swamp, marsh) imply slower, longer-lasting water.

These are linguistic clues — not direct hydrological measurements.

Includes common names like creek, river, and run. These are widespread and don’t strongly indicate water persistence.
