How long is a coastline?

The answer depends on how closely you measure it.

Let's measure it more closely

We've doubled the number of measurement points to 100.

The measuring line can now follow the coastline more closely, capturing smaller bays and headlands.

You might have noticed that after increasing the number of measurement points our coastline has grown. It was 3,351 km long — but now it is 3,798 km long.

Let's increase our measuring points from 100 to 250 measurement points.

As the points get closer together, the straight lines between them capture even more of the coastline's irregularities.

With 500 points, the measurement follows even more of Britain's bays and headlands.

And the measured coastline continues to grow.

At 1,000 measurement points, our measuring intervals are much smaller.

The line now hugs the coastline much more closely.

We've now increased the resolution to 2,500 points.

Yet Great Britain's coastline hasn't changed — our measurement has.

In 1967, mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot analyzed this exact phenomenon in his famous paper, "How Long Is the Coast of Britain?"

He realized coastlines exhibit self-similarity: repeating patterns of bays within bays and headlands within headlands, no matter how closely you zoom in.

So how long is Great Britain's coastline?

There isn't a single, definitive answer.

For instance, the official Ordnance Survey length for mainland Great Britain is approximately 11,073 km (6,881 miles). But that figure relies on standardizing the boundary at the Mean High Water (MHW) mark.

In reality, the concept of a single coastline "line" is itself a human construct. Defining a boundary between sea and land requires picking a tidal datum — a reference level between high and low tide that is never flat relative to Earth's surface, and is in constant, dynamic flux.

Layer on top of that Mandelbrot's fractal geometry: coastlines don't behave like smooth 1D lines or flat 2D surfaces. Great Britain's coast squiggles so complexly across scales that it has a fractal dimension of roughly 1.25.

Ultimately, a coastline isn't a static geometric object. Its length depends entirely on the tide you choose, the scale of your ruler, and how closely you dare to look.

A simple line

A straight line is one-dimensional.

But coastlines aren't straight

Add bays, headlands and irregularities, and the line begins to occupy more space.

A fractal curve can have a dimension somewhere between one and two.

A coastline sits somewhere between these two extremes.
